NMHealth Reports First Case

Alert: Santa Fe, NM - August 6, 2024

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) has confirmed the first West Nile virus infection of 2024 in the state. The infection was confirmed in a resident of Union County, according to a report released on Tuesday by NMHealth.

West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause a range of symptoms, from mild fever and headache to more severe neurological conditions such as encephalitis and meningitis. In most cases, people infected with West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms, but severe cases can be fatal.

NMHealth is urging New Mexicans to take precautions to protect themselves from West Nile virus, including using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and eliminating standing water around their homes.
